How Conversational Hypnosis Works

There’s been a lot made of hypnotism and what it can do over centuries of time. What many people like about it is the possibility to exert strong influence over someone when needed. Conversational hypnosis suggests that you can do just that. It’s an exciting concept but not something you can do without study and practice. You’ll need to learn some well-rehearsed manipulations and strategies to make others feel as you do about something.

Conversational hypnosis principles were first introduced by Milton Erickson, a well-known psychotherapist and hypnotist. It was his belief that trance states weren’t uncommon nor that they needed to be induced elaborately. His belief is that people entered trance states many times during the day such as while focusing deeply on reading something. He also held the theory that directly attempting to bring about a trance state or giving direct suggestions may be resisted. Instead, Erickson used rapport, confusion, and indirect suggestions to bring about trance states.

Therefore, the first part to inducing conversational hypnosis is to develop a rapport with your subject. That means you simply agree with all that he or she says. For example, if your subject states, “We’re never getting out of this,” your response should be, “You’re right. We’re not getting out.”

Next, there’s the use of confusion. You simply confuse things. At times you can use a basic question like, “But even if we can’t get out of this, are you positive that you won’t think of a way within the next few minutes?” This is only one way to use confusion. Another way is to advocate resistance. You can say something like, “This problem isn’t solvable. It’s just too hard. There’s no way to fix this.” The subject will most likely jump in eventually and start debating that the problem isn’t unsolvable at all. Lastly, you may suggest that a subject continue doing more of something that’s not working.

The last step in conversational hypnosis is using an indirect suggestion like, “You’re not feeling as hopeless now, are you?” If you’ve done everything else correctly, you’ll have this person under your influence now.

Conversational hypnosis is a great tool for salespeople.
