How to Find Out If a Subject Is in the Hypnotic Trance
September 10, 2009
Understanding immediately when someone achieved a trance is something very necessary in hypnosis. Assessing trance signals and using accurate signal recognition systems is very important.
This is important to know because you need to understand when someone is able to respond to your words. Sometimes they are minor signs, while in other cases it’s very obvious that they are in a trance.
Here I will tell you more about the signs you should look for when someone is in the hypnotic trance.
First of all, when someone is in a trance, there are always certain physiology aspects that will signal the change. They can’t control them, as they are made at an unconscious level. Keep in mind that different people react in different ways when going into the trance, so it’s not the same change in everyone.
A hypnotist needs to understand each person and be able to spot the different changes they experience.
A change in the way they breathe is the signal that is most obvious. As the trance relaxes them, most subjects will have a slower breathing rate. In some cases though, the rate will go up.
The focus of the conversation can also determine the type of breathing someone will have in a trance. Asking the subject to relax will get you a slow breathing rate, but if they get a sense of danger or there is a fast progression through events that are exciting, they might have a quicker breath rate.
When you look for the signs of a change in the breath rate, be careful not to get punched or slapped. This can especially happen if you stare at a woman’s chest, so make sure you use the peripheral vision.
Besides watching the chest, you can also look at the face, as its feature become smoother when they get into the trance, when their face muscles start to relax.
The third signal can also be spotted when you watch the face. It’s the eyes, which change a bit in the trance. They usually get fixed on a single spot, like they are staring at nothing.
Another trance sign is the sleepy look, or when their eyes glaze over. In some cases, the subject will not move the eyes at all.
Muscle twitches are the fourth sign you should be looking for. They can take place on any part of the body that has muscles and they are pretty easy to spot usually, especially if they are bigger muscles. In many cases, they will be shoulder twitches or facial tics, and these two are quite easy to spot.
The fifth sign is different from the fourth one, as it’s the body’s immobility. In some cases the subject will stop moving completely in a trance.
The last of the signals is when the passive response rate increases. They are passive and less argumentative when this happens.
It’s quite easy to spot the six signals I showed you above. Just remember that different people give out different signals and keep practicing so you will know when these signs show up.
