Using Presuppositions to Change Hypnotic Realities

October 10, 2009

Conversational Hypnosis is powered by language. You need to know how to influence certain aspects of the language so that you are successful. The Stealth Tactics are valuable concepts which you must master.
Stealth Tactics have the purpose of entering the subject’s mind, without being detected from the critical factor and not triggering a negative response.

Most of the times, the Stealth Tactics are combined with language principals and other concepts. They will all help create a full process of hypnosis. Mastering these tactics and also other language tactics will help you a lot in your practice.

The fourth Stealth Tactic which is used in Conversational Hypnosis is called the concept of Presuppositions. A presupposition is nothing more than a linguistic assumption and it is used everyday and by everybody. Presuppositions are what you assume because you have heard or made something. They are thought to be real due to the language that was used.

Most of our day to day statements are created on presuppositions. Here is an example: “The kids are sitting in the back of the car.” One of the presuppositions in this phrase is the fact that there is a car. Then, the next presupposition is about the front and the back of the car and then there is another one about thinking there is more than one child inside the car. Just because of a statement these things appear true. Also, if the information is implied, you do not consciously try to disagree and you take it in.

Sure, there are many kinds of presuppositions but we will focus on those that are meaningful for the art of hypnosis.

The first one is the awareness presupposition. If you imply that you are aware of something, the listener will be drawn to you. You will be grabbing the focus of attention. If resistance happens, it will only be in the awareness level and not on the subject itself.

The second kind is the one that uses time sequences in statements. This type of presupposition will develop a series of events linked in a sequence or in the specific time they took place. To do this, you can use numerical order. Also, you can manage this if you use words like end, as soon as, after, before, begin or any other word that is used to describe time sequences. This technique works because it distracts the attention of the listener and he is not resisting because he is too busy on organizing the events in the order they took place.

Sometimes, using this technique you can avoid the Critical Factor. After learning these three types, you can also stack presuppositions one on top of the other. While you are doing this, you are overwhelming the conscious mind and it will not notice the suggestion you are subtly slipping in.

Usually when the subject’s conscious mind gets overloaded it will just go with the flow of all the speaking and it will be receptive. Sometimes, using this, the resistance is nonexistent.

The final presupposition uses adverbs and adjectives which will imply action and quality. Usually they are descriptive words like fortunately or luckily, and you will make the listener appreciate the quality of one thing like in this example: “Luckily, I did catch the train.”

There is no question about the train’s existence; the attention is drawn to the lucky part. If you made this statement alone your listener would not resist the fact there was a train but want to know why you almost missed it. The resistance is newly placed on the how; how did the action happen, how did you almost miss the train. In this presupposition there is no need to know how to use or stack them because the conscious graciously does it for you.

It is very important to realize that these great statements are very valuable tools so that you can sneak into the subject’s mind and make suggestions, getting pass the critical factor.
